At the RX annual benefit on March 12, 2011, HallMfg was on site running the Renga Game and Site Stamp.

Renga Game was an opportunity for guests to engage with a wall of RX keywords. Game contestants organized words into a renga poem. At the end of the evening, RX staff voted on the most resonant entry. Today you are invited to take this model of the winning entry. In 2012 we are producing this as cast iron commemorative signage for RX.
Aims of this project are to inspire a playful engagement with the RX organizational key messages. Thanks to all of the Renga Game players, and congrats to Cynthia Smith for the winning entry shown in the photograph here.

This project uses RXtype: a font produced during Site Stamp at the same event in March 2011. Clay impressions were pulled from the RX inventory of objects and materials on site. Those stamps were then quickly shaped into three dimensional letterforms.

Four new glitched objects. On view at Walnut Ink in Michigan City, Indiana through September 25, 2011.

Quotes from four composers were inserted into image syntax of photographs taken of four groupings of piano key combinations. The resulting digital glitch was translated onto the physical object by a mix of analog, handi-craft studio manipulations.
The composers were chosen for their early experiments with modifying a keyboard instrument to produce an unexplored and inventive sound experience or environment for listeners and players. This practice became known as the prepared piano. To me this method resonates as aggressive and precise, exploratory and unpredictable. The mood of the collective gesture says punk or slant with gusto in a way that is timeless and poetic and refreshed.

EXT. RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY - NIGHT
Late May cool in the far northeastern United States.

DRIVER opens car door, gets inside, starts motor, and begins driving north towards the rural route dirt road.

INT. AUTOMOBILE - NIGHT

Darkness and faint radio
DRIVER has little experience driving this dirt road, but this trip is thought to be around five miles total.

As the car moves further from the town center - enter pure darkness, driver disorientation increases.
DRIVER tries to maintain focus by thinking thoughts of the familiar, radio changes and distorts.

Darkness increases to 100%.
The roadway is diminished to the path of the headlights.
DRIVER glimpses high level visual distortion when glancing out through the side windows (tightly closed)(conceptually cloaked)

Time passes. DRIVER thought bubble: LOST?

DRIVER gains visible registration of a distant rural light.
A single farm light grows closer as acceleration decreases. Radio returns to legibility.

Renga Game and Site Stamp

As part of the RX annual benefit on March 12, 2011, HallMfg will be on site running the Renga Game and Site Stamp.

Renga Game is an opportunity for event attendees to engage with a wall filled with RX keywords. Game contestants can enter by organizing select keywords into a renga (poem) in the haiku form of a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. Attendees are encouraged to buy a digital print of the entries with proceeds going towards the production of the game trophy.
Aims of this project are to inspire a playful engagement with the RX organizational key messages.
At the end of the evening, RX staff will vote on their favorite renga entry. The top choice will be developed into the trophy, and a multiple of that will live at the warehouse as a permanent commemorative.

Site Stamp is an on-site design activity that will result in the production of RXtype. We are making a 3-dimensional font.
An index of the forms, shapes, surfaces, textures, and available tactile details from raw materials, appliances, building supplies, and hardwares at the RX warehouse will be pressed into clay tiles. The tiles will be collected and cut, shaped and formed into an alphabet of letter forms.
Once the alphabet is complete, each letter will be molded in plaster. The RXtype can be used to produce signage and typographic messages for the organization and beyond. The winner of the Renga Game will receive a trophy cast in iron using RXtype.
In keeping with an essential mission of RX to identify opportunities to recode existing objects by assigning new value or context to that material or object, this project identifies a single claw foot iron bathtub to be upcycled into raw iron. The raw material will be smelted down and cast into the trophy and commemorative, permanent signage for the warehouse.

These are two new glitches.

The top one is a combination of the first event image (previous post) with the more clear still life tabletop image seen at bottom.

In each glitch was made by only changing image data arbitrary numbers to: 30 or 10

These are easy to remember when editing and scrolling and these numbers mark the event date.

This research asks:
Can a pattern of tonal blips, fragmongered shifts, or despazilixels happens be happening for your seeing ?

Can this kind of shifting populate a melodic environment ? Can players glitch rhythm ? If they do it on purpose it sounds bad.
If they play with feeling it sounds shifted/tilted/shaped every time, right ? Glitch happens.

About this project:
Some have called folk music a type of communication, passed on by word of mouth in a flexible conversational manner over time. The audible result is often a fluid and humble song that evolves the more times the song is approached, delivered, or interpreted within variety of contexts. Based on available instrumentation, our collaborator sensibilities, and the synergy of these forces, our approach to this project has been defined as a folk-ish. As a group of visual artists and designers, our studio practices range from kinetic sculpture, photo installation, drawing for performance, drawing for exploration, performance photography, and experiments in the built environment to name a few. Our individual specializations lie far outside of the traditional music community or industry. Rather music making is here an outlet or reason to put this group together for regular meets ups, brainstormers, and rehearsals to investigate the notion that music making opens a channel within the human mind and expands the capacity for higher level thought. Over time this platform has cultivated melodic combinations and poetic missed connections on the floor of the music studio, some that are be unpredictable or unrepeatable, some rich with promise and at times wonderful. More specifically there are often mutations, blips, side tracks, and crack ups that contribute to the searching quality of the project in unscripted ways.

Here/Not There - Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

This installment of the summer series of five multidisciplinary performances aims to answer the questions: What remains after a performance occurs? What happens when a person misses a performance? Can the experience of that performance be recreated and seen in a gallery even if it occurred elsewhere?

Here/Not There stretches something ephemeral -- performance -- into something more lasting. It explores how something can be experienced in one place and yet offer a sense of the experience in another.

Each week in July, a different Chicago artist presents ways to merge the performative and the visual. This project is curated by Tricia Van Eck and Michael Green in coordination with the performance and marketing department.

Over a non-contiguous 24-hour work period, a series of
experimental chairs will be produced on the site.
For this project Andy Hall will set up a temporary workspace as HallMfg.
During each hour of work, one chair will be designed, built, then displayed. This project is supported by materials from the ReBuilding Exchange a local organization with the mission to divert building materials from the waste stream and make them accessible to the public for reuse. This event expands the HallMfg process of secondary-use design where building and experimenting with materials results in edited knowledge and visually interesting material solutions.
The space is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Great job (again) ReBuilding Exchange for stocking vintage materials for me to procure and transform into objects. The Nighttime Dance Party was a smashing success. Yuri Lane, DJ Nevin and Cap'n Crunk with the Academy Records Houseband were extra action, above and beyond !! Daytime Workshop came on the heels and helped ground us all. Folks left happy to have a drum to take home with a new knowledge seed of how-to.

Does infinity exist in our physical world? Do space or material go on forever? If one travels a line through their universe, might she revisit the starting point again and again. Can looped experience be used to create infinite space and time? This project will try to answer these questions in a two-part event and art installation.
In keeping with the mission of [prak-sis] to provide unique experience of inspiration and optimism combined with our interest in events, live music, & skill-sharing, this HallMfg. project unfolds in two parts: Nighttime and Daytime. Both events will take place in a storefront in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago.
This physical environment will be built out with industry by-product materials & FSC lumber.
HallMfg. will use these materials to fabricate props and modular hospitality supports for the installation environment.

Nighttime: Saturday
An evening of music and improvised experimentation will take place from 7pm to 12am.
An conceptual set in the shape of a figure eight will allow a flow from a group of Academy Records musicians in the center (intersection), to a left deejay, back to the musicians, then to a right deejay, then back to the musicians, again and again around the figure eight shape, referencing the idea of unboundedness, vast space, and skewed, extended perception.
The physical space will contain the following objects:
1) Central Musician Area populated a rotating cast of musicians, afro cuban drums, amplifiers, guitars, and a small table for electronics, claves, bells, and shakers, microphones. "The Afro-Cuban Garage Rock Band"
2) Two DJ tables, Left and Right (made of stacked wooden Cajon box drums) for two Deejays spinning
Rock Steady/Reggae (DJ NEVIN) and Old Skool (Cap'n Crunk).
3) Central Hospitality Table (wooden Cajon box drums, stacked, and strapped)
4) Temporary wall "drawing" (made of rug, paper, matting, etc. TBD)
5) Signage to describe project partners and ideas
Evening guest performers: Yuri Lane, MC Bembe, MC Jadele

Daytime: Next Day, Sunday
An all ages rhythm workshop will take place from 1pm to 3pm.
This will be free and open to the public. No experience necessary.
This short workshop will cover the basics of playing polyrhythms with a group of people. Workshop will explore traditional rhythms, as well as improvisation and dynamics. Each participant will be invited to take a Cajon drum home at the end of the workshop !
(While supplies last)
The physical space will contain the following objects:
1) Approximately thirty Cajon, box drums arranged as seats in a large circle. Unstacking the tables/set from the previous evening programme creates this seating array.
2) Palimpsest of temporary wall drawing
3) Signage to describe project partners and illustrate workshop ideas

After moving to a stellar storefront from the ol' spot on the corner of 17th and Laflin...Golden Age has re-landed. The month of Nov.08 is dedicated to the re-fitting of the new shop at 1744 W. 18th St. in Pilsen. info@goldenagestore.com

We have collectively discussed a plan, made a spreadsheet, mockups, models, drawings, and wish list. This will be a mad flurry of Hall Mfg. activity to produce deliverables by the beginning of Dec.

One component of the project is the retrofitting the 1.0 storage box into a multi-monger-for all display needs.
Cutting some basic sheet parts on the CNC over at SAIC. Thanks to the Brians in advance for mastery.

Tonite I was one of three jury members for the GET LIT competition at DWR Tree Studios Chicago with renowned lighting designer Pablo Pardo and Apartment Therapy editor Janel Laban.

What a great place to have a a Design Within Reach Showroom ?? !! Not only filled with a superb collection of objects, but what great staff and vibrant community, as well an historic landmark. The perfect site for this important invitational project:

Rules:
Only one entry per designer per application may be submitted. If you wish to submit more than one entry, you must fill out separate applications for each.
All lighting entries must be submitted in the form of photography, video, computer rendering or drawing to DWR Tree Studio by May 12, 2008, by 6pm. All submitted collateral must be labeled clearly with your name. To be considered, entries must be original and functional. Submissions containing a work-in-progress will be accepted on the condition that the actual piece will be completed at the time of the exhibition. Submissions should be emailed to getlit@dwr.com

With family and friends, spent in a massive converted barn on Warren Woods Road of Three Oaks , Michigan.

Outdoor sports and follies combined nicely with meals and relaxations amongst the party - goers.

Catfish pond and surrounding hills combined with the soy bean fields and the woods hike to really put this one way up top on the charts for me. What a great geography...so close to Lake Michigan, so farm too.

Less than one week until the opening of the Act Natural exhibition. We have been logging some deep hours in the workshop to make final details happen on this one. The load bearing test happened late on Friday night. All is well.

We install this show in a few weeks. The work at our shop is in the final stages of production after an extended design process. HallMfg. will turn out with one new, experimental furniture object. This long process has yield a large surplus of sketches, models, genotypes, and various scale prototypes. An upcoming post to this place will catalog the archive.

The City has approved funding for this project. The installation site is the Riverwalk, between Wells and Franklin Street in downtown Chicago. Right now, we are looking for a fabricator. Frame material is mild steel, 1 1/2" angle iron.
Installation will take place either mid-April or June.

On Tuesday, October 30th 2007 Zip Car Cartage made its final drive from Chicago’s Lakeview East neighborhood to the City of Chicago’s Goose Island Recycling Facility.

During the month of October, The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce generously stored all of the household hazardous materials that were collected throughout the 44th and 46th wards by Zip Car Cartage on three consecutive Saturdays.
This was part of the larger project ART 44.46 curated by Stuart Keeler.

Once the materials were loaded into the Zip Car, HallMfg. processed multiple loads of recyclables to the center on Goose Island. The following list of materials are documented collections made during this project. All of this stuff was thus diverted from the Chicago waste stream or remanufactured for schools.

Laptops, computer monitors, dvd players, televisions, remote controls, telephones, cellular phones, computer towers, keyboards and controls, electronic games, batteries, cable boxes, mp3 players, solvents, latex paint, oil paint, cleaning products, varnishes, sealers, and epoxy resin paint.

The project mantra was “All People, recycle your old electronics, chemicals, and paints, and help make this type of exchange often!”

The goal of the project was to raise awareness of the Goose Island facility while at the same time drawing attention to the actions of an individual artist as service provider, temporary neighborhood worker, and civic caretaker.

Additionally, during the ART 44.46 exhibition, HallMfg. installed a temporary, text-based campaign on the ground of one of the Zip Car parking lots in Lakeview East. The biodegradable message washed away gradually from rain, and by the 30th of October 2007 it was gone.

This text based work is one result of an on-going conversation with ZIP CAR corporate offices.

As a sponsor for my project ZIP CAR CARTAGE, they request that I conceptualize an on-site message for one of their car storage parking lots. This lot is within the boundries of the ART 44.46 exhibition. My goal was to make a highly potent, anti-climate change message that clearly spells out my own more aggressive slanted version of the ZIP CAR mission statement.

From EAST to WEST, the 6-spaces read
NO CAR ,
ANTI IDLE ,
DRIVE LESS ,
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ,
NEW MOBILITY ,
NOT GREEN, REAL

As cars come and go from the ZIP CAR spaces, the messages are hidden or revealed throughout the day. On the busy Saturday that the message was applied, no space was occupied for more than 5 minutes. This is a good indication that car sharing is a popular and effective service. It was also a great benefit to the installation of the work.

The text was applied with a trowel. The material is COB, a mixture of clay, sand, straw, and a little bit of Portland Cement.

As the day wore on, each message dried, shrunk, cracked, and faded to match the parking space. At the end of the day, a raised texture was visible from the roadway, as one approached the message popped up. By the evening rain came and the biodegradable message began to return to the earth.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – August 27, 2007 – “We didn’t see anything like this in Chicago, so we said, ‘let’s do it,’” says Martine Syms, co-owner of Golden Age with Marco Kane Braunschweiler.
The store is located at 1500 W 17th St in Pilsen, and features art, books, music, clothes, and other sellable goods by local and international artists. Some items include t-shirts by LA-based Sumi Ink Club, books by Swiss publisher Nieves, and hand-screened cds by Chicago’s-own, Binges. Design / build services for the store were provided by HallMfg.

In addition to the store, Golden Age houses a sewing studio, and screenprinting facilities. Golden Age opens its doors August 31, 2007 at 12pm. The first twenty visitors will receive gold. HallMfg. produced this furniture from 90% percent recycled material: (industry flake board and reclaimed recycled plastic lumber)
All other material is FSC certified wood.
12 sheets of flake board = 20 pieces of furniture
The red edge is derived from plastic lumber salvaged from a Chicago Public School playground demolition.
This documentation is from the rough installation. Clear coat has yet to be applied. More later.

The TWO DOOR DESK is made from 2-vintage, raised panel doors that were rescued from the waste stream in an urban area, disassembled, and remanufactured.
Doors become abandoned by many homeowners. This is caused by wear and tear or remodeling objectives. You have admired a door because it had a thick
material profile of rich old wood components. The patina of time on this desk’s door-wood will inspire sustainable narratives and questions,
leading to a future instance of this kind of gesture.
The construction method for the TWO DOOR DESK is derived from the classic Shaker Trestle Table, a traditional style of household furniture. All joined parts are mor-
tise and tenon or full lap, and the desktop can be removed by demounting-four bolts.
A DESK represents a solid, multi-use zone. It is a site for individual or collective thoughts to be gathered and discussed. It is a scalable platform where work or social
interactions can occur.
The TWO DOOR DESK will develop local narratives about present objects, their history, and their future.
